First Announcemnt The Interaction Between Nursery Management and Silvicultural Operations IUFRO Subject Group 3.02.00 Operational Methods in the Establishment and Treatment of Stands" To be held at The Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center Auburn, Alabama, USA September 28,29, and 30, 1999 http://www.forestry.auburn.edu/coops/sfnmc/iufro.html Plantation establishment is a series of steps beginning with the nursery culture of quality plants and extending through site preparation, planting, and post-planting care. Success is dependent upon the proper integration of each step in the series. Nursery managers can manipulate plant quality through spacing, fertilization, pruning, conditioning, and other cultural practices. The silviculturalist can improve outplanting performance through mechanical or chemical site preparation, weed control, fertilization, as well as combinations of these and other tools. However, little is known about how these two sectors of the plantation establishment process interact. For example, can large seedling size compensate for herbaceous weed control? Can nutrient loading in the nursery compensate for field fertilization? Do these nursery induced effects carry through to the end of the rotation? All too often forest managers, researchers, and academicians tend to isolate each step in the plantation establishment process into distinct administrative and operational units. It is the principle objective of this meeting to provide a forum for discussing the interrelationships between the production of quality planting stock and silvicultural operations in the field. The organizers will provide a forum for discussing not only how nursery practices such as spacing, fertility, and undercutting affect outplanting survival and growth, but more about how such practices can compensate for and/or synergize with post-planting activities such as weed control and site preparation. Moreover, we hope the participants could address the impact of these interactions on plantation productivity at the end of the rotation.
