S. is available in The College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a suitably qualified student. The project is a collaborative one involving participants/collaborators from the U. S. Forest Service and the Dept. of Soil Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The general objective of the research project involves assessment of the early establishment and growth of aspen as well as key soil physical properties following organic matter removals and simulated soil compaction treatments in the Upper Great Lakes Region. The project is part of a long-term study instituted by the U.S. Forest Service in 1992. The successful student applicant will focus principally on the below-ground biomass response and foliar chemistry of the aspen regeneration. The position is available starting January 1999. The assistantship is in the vicinity of $9,600/yr and may include an out-of-state tuition waiver. Minimum qualifications include a BS degree in forestry, soils, or related science field; good written and oral communication skills; and an interest in the stated area of research.
