Mark Johnston johnston@derm.gov.sk.ca *************************** Specialist, Forest Ecosystem Productivity The Forest Ecosystems Branch, Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, requires a dynamic, highly motivated individual to coordinate the creation and maintenance of a new provincial forest ecosystem inventory. You will provide the conceptual framework and technical direction for the ecosystem inventory process, supervise forest ecosystem inventory activities, and coordinate these activities with other resource disciplines. You will also be responsible for the maintenance of the current forest inventory system and for providing inventory data to internal and external clients. You will have extensive knowledge of: Major components of forest inventories, including map preparation, field sampling, data compilation and data management; Mathematical statistics as used in inventory design including sampling theory, mensuration and statistical analyses; Methods used for the collection of data on forest ecosystems; Current technology used in remote sensing of forest ecosystems and in the creation of maps from aerial photographs in a GIS environment, e.g., digital photogrammetry equipment. You will be familiar with: Various approaches to forest land classification currently in use in North America; The use of GIS technology for the storage, retrieval and analysis of spatial data; Current approaches used in growth and yield, ecosystem modeling and yield curve development. You will have the ability to: Provide supervision and leadership to a large group of forest inventory and mapping staff; Work effectively in a team environment with other forest science specialists; Interact effectively with a wide range of both public and private sector clients in providing forest ecosystem data and products; Represent the department on provincial and national committees dealing with inventory design and analysis, e.g. the Canadian Forest Inventory Committee. You will be: A highly motivated self starter; Proactive, energetic and creative in your approach to problem-solving; Organized, flexible and able to work simultaneously on a number of problems and programs. Typically the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be acquired through the completion of a Bachelors/Master's degree in forestry including full courses in forest mensuration and statistics. This position will be based in Prince Albert, SK, Canada and will involve extensive travel throughout the province.
