It is always a shock to me when someone defends Patrick Moore and actually thinks that he is simply promoting dialogue. To me he is so transparent and conisitent. His mistruths and half-truths are certainly consistent. The answer, Patrick, to your transparently subversive question about Maxxam/Pacific Lumber is that since the Maxxam take-over in 1985 they have been consistently clearcutting, mostly on steep slopes over watersheds. Their own 1993 prospectus says that they will cut 93% of 179,000 acres by 2006. If you can call the 7% that will remain proof of selective cut rather than clearcut then what they are doing is selective cut. They have over 250 documented violations of the Forest Practice Act, including the "uncorrectable" destruction of 5 major watersheds. There is a whole neighborhood without a water supply from the mudslides that resulted from clearcutting over the watershed. See Water Quality Board documentation for proof. The Water Quality Board has required that they provide water to the residents at Elk River and they have refused to do so. Homes have been destroyed by their clearcuts on a steep hill right over the homes. They, and you, will have all kinds of excuses for the slide that buried the homes but you will not get support from the geologists and engineers who have studied the situation.I am assuming that you are being well paid for your services. I, on the other hand, get no remuneration for dissemination of information. I do so because we have a genuine tragedy happening where I live that is helped to happen by lackies such as yourself. I will never understand how people like yourself and Charles Hurwitz live with themselves. Is it just a big game to you?
