At least in the 'montane' zone (about 500 - 1000m a. sea level) dominated by silver fir (Abies alba), Norway spruce (Picea abies) and beech (Fagus sylvatica) nobody would think of clearfelling as the best way to manage these almost purely coniferous forest types. There is a long tradition in single tree selection forestry in these forests which has proven to be in the same time ecologically and economically successful in private and public forests. In the South West of Germany the allowed area for clearcuts has been reduced to 1 ha (2.5acres). If you want to exceed this you have to apply for a permission. <BR> </BODY> </HTML>
