Date: June 1,1998 RE: Sign-On Letter Asks Home Depot to Stop Selling Old Growth Around the world, old-growth forests are falling at an alarming rate: only 22% of the world's old growth forest remain intact. Seventy-six countries have already lost all of their old growth and in the U.S. less than 4% of our old growth forests remain. Home Depot is the world's largest retailer selling old-growth wood products. For well over a year, environmental groups have been working to get Home Depot to stop this practice. Your group's signature on the following letter will help achieve that objective. Please sign on to the following letter asking Home Depot to stop selling old growth wood products. This letter is part of a larger campaign to protect old growth with the theme of "Don't Log It, Don't Import It, Don't Use It". The logging of old growth forests must stop both here and around the world, as should the trade in old growth wood products , and their sale and use. We are instead calling for a reduction in consumption of wood products and a switch to recycled materials and alternative fibers . Last week, Home Depot held their annual shareholders meeting in Atlanta, GA. Activists met the shareholders on their way into the meeting with literature asking Home Depot to stop selling old growth wood products and live up to their image of being a good neighbor . While the activists were talking to shareholders on the ground a plane was flying overhead carrying the message "Home Depot: stop selling old growth wood". Since Home Depot is such a well-known company it would make a big impact on the rest of the industry if they were to make a commitment to go old growth free. Recent meetings with Home Depot have lead us to believe that they are close to making a decision so it is urgent that we continue to show the broad concern of the environmental community with this sign-on letter.
