Hi Everyone, The Wildlands League and Sierra Legal Defence Fund have recently completed an audit of logging opertations in the Algoma Highlands region of Ontario. This is hardwood-boreal transition forest and has high recreational, biological and economic values. It is located about 75 km inland from the east shore of Lake Superior. We investigated 65 reserves to determine the level of compliance being attained by the forest industry during operations in the area. These reserves were put in place mainly for water quality and habitat protection between 1993 and 1997. We found that approximately 50% of the reserves had been violated and that 30% of the vioaltions were major (such as driving a skidder through a buffer into a brook trout stream). We have filed a formal Request for Investigation under Ontario's Environmental Bill of Rights and are asking that charges be laid.
