Dear Maksym:
Your are correct that half of Ukraine's woods are
in plantations. However, 27% of Japan's landbase is
in plantations compared to 8% for the Ukraine. I should
have said that on a percentage basis (plantation area/landbase),
Japan has more plantations than any other country.
One problem I have is a lack of information on plantation
area in Europe. FAO reports
the amount of "Exploitable forests" and "Un-exploitable forests"
but as far as I know, FAO supplies no information on the
amount of plantations in developed countries (they do provide data on
plantations for developing countries).
Plantations as % of
Total Area Plantations "Natural" landbase woods
__________________________________________________________
------------- 1,000 ha ---
Japan 37,783 10,317 13,523 27% 43%
Ukraine 57,995 4,714 4,686 8% 50%
