Dear colleagues, I am a new member of the FOREST list. I am posting an announcement that I think that list members will find of interest. I tried to send this announcement to the list earlier, but, as far as I can tell, did not succeed. If I did, in fact, succeed, please excuse the duplicate posting. The JOURNAL OF INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY, a peer-reviewed international quarterly published by MIT Press for Yale University, has published a special issue on the industrial ecology of paper and wood. The issue includes summaries of three major comprehensive studies of the production, consumption and waste management of paper and wood from: ** the Environmental Defense Fund Paper Task Force (EDF PTF), ** the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), and ** Maureen Smith of the University of California, Los Angeles. The issue includes an edited transcript of a 3 week long e-mail roundtable between the authors. The issue also includes important research papers on the industrial ecology of forest products: *an analysis of the dynamics of production growth, waste paper utilization and technology diffusion needed to accomplish the goals set out by the American Forest & Paper Assocation's AGENDA 2020 for recycling, energy efficiency and biomass use. and ** a pathbreaking study of where in the product life cycle (forestry, milling or consumption and waste management) the greatest potential for leverage to conserve forests lies.
