Brad Sullivan wrote "People, there are more important problems in forestry, besides what is natural and artificial. If you want to talk about a major problem, how about public perception? Public perception on things, such as, ..." I agree but we as forest (natural resource) managers must be clear in our own minds about a range of issues including what is natural etc.. One thing I believe we have been poor as a profession is promoting good forest management. One of the problems is that people don't have all the facts. For this reason I promote forestry within schools - being careful to try to give both sides of the argument (i.e genuine education). I have just set up the Forest Education Initiative in the North East of Scotland and got funding for educational material for schools which is available through the library service. I would be keen to hear what coordinated initiatives for promoting forestry exist in your part of the globe.
