Dear members of the forest list,
This posting is in response to the request by Villi Wiium concerning
small-scale value added forestry enterprises. I thought this
information might also be interesting to others on the list.
The Province of New Brunswick, Canada, which is a very rural
province, highly dependent on the forestry sector, has recently decided
to put more emphasis on small-scale forestry enterprises. So far,
this has been a very positive initiative for our province which appears
to be enjoying a considerable amount of success. I am not personally
involved. However, I am passing the following information on to you
as a starting point for any further investigations you may wish to
carry out on our local situation.
The information is available on the province's Web Site,
http://www.gov.nb.ca/
Once you have reached this site, you can take one of three paths.
That is, you can click on one of the following three sequential sets
of keyword links to get the information you require:
1. English (or French) - Government - Natural Resources and Energy -
Search - Enter Keyword(s): value added
This gives a list of projects.
2. English (or French) - Government - Natural Resources and Energy -
News
This gives a list of N.B.D.N.R.E. news releases which includes
several on recent value added initiatives in the forestry sector.
3. English (or French) - Business - Resource-Based Industries -
Furniture and secondary wood products - next - contact us
This gives a list of names of people in the N.B. Government you
might wish to contact for more information.
I hope this is useful.
Roger

Greetings FOREST list members,
Currently I am a part of a research team that is looking for ways to
increase employment opportunities in relation to the forest industry in Co.
Clare, Ireland. In Co. Clare there is a considerable annual timber harvest,
but much of the timber is processed elsewhere in Ireland. Locals feel they
could get more value added from the timber, which is where our research
team comes in. Our initial feeling is that the most promising approach is
to encourage small scale enterprises, where each will support a handful of
people. At the moment we're looking for examples of such forestry
enterprises in order to see if any of these could be implemented in
Ireland.
If list members could point to examples of this kind, and preferably some
contact names to get further information, we would very much appreciate
that.
With regards,
