I wonder if anyone has done research in the Lake States or Northeastern US which quantifies the loss of productive land following logging. Our company is exploring this issue on our own lands, and a recent, preliminary photo interpretation test shows approximately 5.5% of the area of our timber sales converted to roads (2.2%), landings (3.0% and slash piles (0.3%). We plan to followup with field checking, including stocking level surveys. We also want to know if others have looked at this, and if so, what are the results. While studies in the West, South, Canadian north, etc, are of value, we are most interested in conditions approximately like our own in northcentral Minnesota. Literature citations and unpublished data are equally welcome. In addition, if anyone has prescriptions, guidelines, etc, designed to prevent or minimize such losses, and is willing to share them, please send me what you can.
