Director of Forest Protection
Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management
Competition No. M10-7-WD96

Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management is seeking a talented and
creative senior manager with a strong background in wildfire management and
forest protection, program development, delivery and evaluation.  Reporting
to the Assistant Deputy Minister of Operations, you will provide senior
leadership and be accountable for all aspects of Saskatchewan's forest
protection program.

As Director of Forest Protection based in Prince Albert you will lead and
co-ordinate Saskatchewan's forest fire management program which includes the
prevention, detection and suppression of wildfires. You will be the Chief
Executive Officer of Saskatchewan's aerial forest fire organization
consisting of 12 tankers and 6 auxiliary aircraft. You will co-ordinate the
delivery of forest, insect and disease mitigation programs and be
responsible for the radio communication needs of the entire department.

In order to qualify, you will possess:

- Bachelor of Science in Forestry or a related field supplemented by
extensive management experience in forest protection OR a two year diploma
in Renewable Resources Management, plus several years of progressively
responsible experience in the Fire Management field OR an equivalent
combination of training and experience.

You will have knowledge of:

- structure of forest industry and government agencies, both federal and
provincial, and their relationship to forest protection programs;
- all aspects of forest fire management including prescribed burning;
- the application of fire science;
- the operational aspects of managing an aviation company in Canada;
- an understanding of the principles of government organization and
regulatory processes; policy and program development and planning; program
delivery and evaluation; budget management of a large, multi-faceted
organization.

The demonstrated ability to:

- provide leadership to a large organization comprised of individuals with
diverse educational backgrounds;
- make sound decisions under pressure;
- consult effectively with a variety of senior officials in the private
sector and government;
- recognize and understand concerns of First Nations and Metis Nations people;
- function under prolonged periods of stress;
- provide strong strategic planning, program management and evaluation
skills to effectively deliver and implement broad policies which impact
delivery;
- serve on interprovincial and national fire management committees;
- travel extensively throughout the province and nationally as required.

Salary Range: $61,188 to $79,572
