Smith Editor and Director Trade and Media Services Limited 20 November, 1997 An opportunity exists for Southern Hemisphere governments to be working more closely on key issues of forestry development, according to the author of a newly released report. The review entitled "The Changing Role of Government and Forestry in the Southern Hemisphere" has been produced by Trade and Media Services Ltd, a New Zealand-based company. Government forestry activities in Australia, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina are detailed in the 94-page review. A key finding of the review is that the governments of the Southern Hemisphere face many common problems and challenges, said TMS Ltd editor and director, Michael R. Smith. "Each country has localised issues but together they face a series of issues on which there is a great deal of commonality," Michael Smith said. An important issue examined in the review is how Governments in the Southern Hemisphere reconciling the need to balance a thrust for privatisation by modern economies and an increasing desire for the benefits from forestry development to be more evenly spread through rural communities. An important finding of the review is that the least complex the political structure the better the outcome for clearer thinking on the administration of forestry policies and the less likelihood there is of political interference in decision-making processes. TMS Ltd publishes the Southern Hemisphere Forest Industry Journal, a subscription-only quarterly covering developments the forest industries of South America, New Zealand, Australia, Southern Africa and the South Pacific.
