I am writing about a spacing experiment in N. Ireland. The experiment at
Baronscourt, County Tyrone, tests the response of Picea sitchensis to
early respacing (mean height ca. 4m) to achieve stand densities of 320,
475, 725, 1450 and 2900 stems/ha. The stand is now 49 years old and over
30m tall; average tree sizes at year 47 ranged from 0.6 m3 to 2.2 m3.
Growth and yield data at year 31 were reported by Kilpatrick et al. in
Forestry 54, 17-29 (1981). Effects of spacing on timber density at year 32
were reported by Savill and Sandels in Forestry 56, 109-120 (1983).
Results from subsequent assessments mayare available at this address
below.
The experiment is likely to be felled within the next few years. There
are three issues. First, those scientists who would like to view the
experiment are very welcome to do so in the remaining years before
felling. Second, we would welcome suggestions for research which could be
carried out on the felled material. Third, possible sources of
collaborative (including financial) support.
