Subject: Early Alert for GIS/Biometrics Position
Author: monitor@rana.im.nbs.gov at NBS-Internet-Gateway Date:
10/1/97 4:13 PM
Please distribute the following widely. Position closes OCTOBER 18.
The USDA Forest Service and Mead Paper Corporation are cooperating on
a study of the integration of Geographic Information Systems and
forest sampling. The Northeastern Forest Experiment Station
laboratory in Delaware, OH (just north of Columbus) is seeking to fill
a 9-13 month temporary position to oversee the study. The primary
duties would be: 1) oversight and/or development of GIS layers, 2)
analysis of the forest inventory data, 3) development of models to
relate the inventory data and GIS layers, and 4) writeup of the
results. It is an excellent opportunity to gain experience both in
Forest Service research and with forest industry in a practical
application. An undergraduate degree is required. Candidates must
have good GIS skills. The next most important skills involve forest
inventory and spatial analysis. Other desirable qualities include a
statistical background, SAS, Systat, or S-Plus training, and a desire
to conduct research. Chip Scott will oversee the inventory design and
analysis, and Louis Iverson will oversee the GIS and spatial analysis
portion of the study. The study itself will be conducted in Southeast
Ohio on Mead's 100,000+ ac holdings. The position will hopefully
start in early
December or January. Contact Ivalee Church in Radnor, PA at
610-975-4245 or Chip Scott for further information.
