Dear Nelson Wong, Dear Forest list readers, Everything has already been said about flames, netiquette, copyright, email list rules, content and tone, etc. Here is just a small comment about my own message: I reacted to the Listowner's copyright message which included the core of Mr Wong's message but not the 'attached' text. I had previously deleted Mr Wong's message, so I could not go back to it and read it over again. Now, I understand Mr Wong had attached Reuters text and had not simply added a link to the original web page. I would just like to say: the rules are simple, so make everybody's life easier by sticking to them and simply add a link to a web page, do not attach someone else's text. Dear Nelson Wong, > Violation of copyrights occurs when a copyrighted document is > circulated/distributed for commercial purposes. Only for 'commercial' purposes? > We circulate a couple of magazines here together with notes from the > CEO every week. I don't think our CEO has breach copyrights law ...... I agree that handing over the original magazine to someone else is not against the copyright law. This was not the subject of our discussion, but please tell me more about what/who is CEO. > Much of the info at FAO & WRI are copyrighted but you can still > download & distribute them for free. If it's against the law to attach > a document, it would have been illegal to download it in the first > place. Have you ever photocopied a book/article and handed it over to a colleague/friend? Have you ever distributed a photocopied book to all participants at an international conference? So what if we make the difference between private email and an email list. You get the picture? And what is WRI? OK, I am not a copyright law specialist. But, for everybody's sake, adopt the behaviour rules of the group when you participate in that group, especially when the behaviour rules are simple. This does not exclude the possibility to express critics, comments, etc. It's just the difference between what to do and how to do it. Sorry for jamming your email box with this. Best regards, pv
