SAF Session on ZPG

To those attending the SAF Meeting in Memphis, Tennessee

I encourage you to attend the presentation by Dianne Dillon-Ridgley, President
of Zero Population Growth. I expect her talk will touch on the expected
increase in demand of wood from forests and the likely effect this will have on
forest cover.

Monday, October 6, 1997   8 - 11:30 AM

===============

We know that the nation's and the world's population is increasing--but what
impact will this have on forests?

Will future wood needs be related to future population levels?

Are we considering the adoption of a voluntary "population growth ethic?"

Is population growth consistant with "sustainability?"

Does population growth + sustainablility = shorter rotations?

How many tree plantations (or tree farms) would be needed to provide wood to 12
billion people?

If 5% of the world's landbase were in tree plantations by the year 2050, would
this be too little or too much?

In general, do economists favor population growth or population stability?

In general, do foresters favor population growth or population stability?

As always, views expressed here are my own
(and I am not speaking on the behalf of others).

I use only 100% post-consumer paper in my home printer. (discarded used office
paper printed on one side)

====================================================================== The world
population is expected to double by the year 2100.
Therefore the annual demand for wood for energy (etc.)
will increase and might double (to more than 7 billion m3/yr). To provide
plantation wood for people in the future,
support the planting of trees on pastureland.
Set a goal of converting 8 million ha of pastureland/yr for the next 55 years.
This would increase tree plantations to about 5% of the world's landbase.
