I write to support your relaying the news report about the fires
in Indonesia. Of course you could have referred members of the list to a
website, but when the matter is so serious and life threatening to so many
people, can human beings afford to be so principled and can news
reporters morally claim the right to "copyright" ? Moreover,
international copyright laws are not straightforward and applied in
practice differently from country to country. I would submit that when
the source is duly acknowledged and an original article runs to very few
lines of matters which are already widely reported, intellectual property
rights may not be easy to justify. But the main argument is that common
sense should prevail in each circumstance and I would urge the list owner
to see the list rules applied sensitively in this instance. Graham Whyte
