Re: IMPORTANT: Forest list policy concerning copyright issues

Dear Forest listowner, dear list readers,

With all my respect to the quality of the forum that you want to defend,

I feel that the message concerning the copyright issues is not
completely right.
The copyright message states:
"....Republication or redistribution of Reuters content is expressly
prohibited without the prior written consent of Reuters. ...."
Yet, republication or redistribution is not the same as referencing.
Using an electronic link to the original web page is quit the same as a
bibliographic reference at the end of a scientific book. It is about the

same as someone telling you that you should read the article about Bill
Clinton at page 4 in the Financial Times today.

The result of republication or redistribution is that the reader can
immediately read (exerpts of) the text.
The result of referencing is that the reader needs to find the original
web page, the scientific book or today's newspaper to read the article.

Republication and redistribution are generally prohibited, but
referencing is not. On the contrary, publishers and web page maintainers

are usually very happy that someone uses their references. It is
considered as free publicity. Publishers hope they can sell more paper,
and web page maintainers hope more people loads their pages (and reads
their commercials).

If you still think the above statements are wrong or incomplete, please
correct them, so that I will not make a legal mistake next time I post a

link to this list.

By the way, I also am disappointed by the lack of interest that the
media brings up for the asian forest fires.
By the way, I have no idea whether there is an article about Bill
Clinton in today's Financial Times.

Best regards,
pv
