CONSERVATION BIOLOGY AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL: IDENTIFYING
    MANAGEMENT AND EVOLUTIONARY UNITS

A symposium to be held in association with the
VII International Congress of Ecology - 1998
     FLORENCE, ITALY
     19-25 July 98

This special symposium, being organized by the Biological Resources
Division (BRD) of the U.S. Geological Survey, will emphasize discussion of
molecular genetics as an implement for delineating management and
evolutionary units. A objective of this symposium (and the accompanying
proceedings) is to provide the world's resource managers with an anthology
of unambiguous criteria for designating units of management and
evolutionary significance predicated on contemporary understanding.

A fundamental criterion for distinguishing a species or recognizing a
species component (e.g., subspecies, distinct population segment) is
reproductive isolation. Modern molecular genetic techniques are ideally
suited for determining the presence or absence of gene exchange and
evolutionary legacies. This symposium seeks presentations from an
international cadre of scientists to gain insight into various criteria
proposed by the international community to delineate units for short- and
long-term management goals and taxonomic designation.

We are seeking presentations that represent a diverse group of plant and
animal species for this discussion. Interested scientists surveying a
variety of genomes (mitochondrial, ribosomal, and nuclear DNA) and
utilizing a diversity of current techniques (e.g., VNTRs, RFLPs,
sequencing, RAPDs) are invited to submit a one-page abstract for
consideration by 1 September 1997.

To accommodate the peer-review process for publication of the presented
papers, symposium participants are expected to provide manuscripts to the
conveners by 1 July 1998. Manuscripts will be promptly reviewed and
submitted for publication in a major journal (e.g., Molecular Ecology).

Please provide your abstract no later than September 1, 1997 to:
