Researchers at the Oxford Forestry Institute have been investigating the pollination system of the tropical woody legume Calliandra calothyrsus and discovered that the principal pollinating agents are bats. This has been the case in both the native range (Central America and Mexico) and exotic environments looked at so far (Sri Lanka, Kenya and Indonesia). Recently, however, we have received a report from Queensland, Australia, which suggests that bats are not present in an area where C. calothyrsus produces seed in abundance. Before embarking on mist netting I would be grateful to receive comments from anyone with experience of potential pollinating agents of this tree in either Queensland or other regions where it is grown.
