Hello, Around Winnipeg, Canada, they are establishing some new flood control dykes as well as raising existing dykes. Many of these areas have trees (15+ cm dbh trees, mainly hardwood - Populus, Ulmus, Salix, etc.) and they are considering measures to protect these trees. One alternative is to place barrels around the trees so the soil level immediately around the stem is maintained. The intent is to raise the dykes somewhere between 0.5 and 1 metre. Does anyone have any experience with raising soil levels around trees or have any guesses as to the effects of raising the soil level and what can be done to ameliorate the changes? Thanks for your help. Margaret Penner Box 407, R.R. 4 Hunstville, ON CANADA P1H 2J6 Ph/Fax 705-635-9413 email: mpenner@vianet.on.ca
