The US Forest Service publishes an annual report, "Tree Planting in
the United States." Our office has copies for most years 1983-1996.
Earlier reports may be available in libraries. The report is
published by the Cooperative Forestry Program, State and Private
Forestry, USDA Forest Service. The information contact listed in the
1996 report is:

The reports, which focus more on acres planted than numbers of trees
planted, provide the following tables:
Table 1. Acreage of tree planting, including seeding, on Federal land,
by state and federal department;
Table 2. Acreage of tree planting, including seedling, on non-Federal
public land, by state, state forest land, other state land, and local
govt.;
Table 3. Acreage of tree planting, including seeding, on private land
by state, nonindustrial, forest industry, other industry;
Table 4. Direct seeding by state and ownership category;
Table 5. Total acreage of tree planting, including seeding, by state
and ownership category;
Table 6. Acreage of timber stand improvement by ownership category
and state;
Table 7. Nursery production in thousands of trees, by ownership
category and state.

Greetings to one and all!
I am interested in statistics regarding the number of trees planted in the
United States annually. Ideally, I would like recent figures, as well as for
any year or years in the post-World War II period. I have seen such statistics
(in various scattered forms) for both area and number, my preference at this
point is for numerical listings. Location is of secondary importance (a hard
thing for a geographer to say...) but I would like to know the nature of the
institution or sector responsible for planting. One grouping I've considered is
non-profit/for profit/governmental. I know there is plenty of overlap possible
in that format, any thoughts on an approach that would be simple yet more
appropriate? Do we know how many trees get planted in a year, and by whom?
Thanks for your help, if you think the list would be interested in your response
I will look for it there, otherwise please e-mail me directly at the address
listed below.
Much obliged, Shaul
