Hello foresters
I'm wondering about the theories of island biogeography and fragmentation
of forest areas, is it safe for me to assume that an old growth forest
habitat or a small conservation area which is isolated from al larger
sources of biodiversity and is under stress may in the long term develop
qualities which may benefit the larger habitat as well.
I realize that there are many ill defined factors concerning the size,
species composition and quality of areas in my above question, but what I
am looking for is the idea of a small and unique system contributes
'good' or strengthening qualities to the larger whole, due to long
evolution of the smaller habitat under stress, such as in a small habitat
surrounded by managed forest and prone to edge effects.
