There is (and has been for quite a while) a project going
on at IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems
Analysis) called Population, Environment and Development
(PDE or POP). They have dealt with the role of education in
PDE. You may wish to check their activities, participants
and publications from:

http://www.iiasa.ac.at/Research/POP/

At least one of their case studies (Vape Verde) has
included education in a very constructive way in the PDE
problematics.
