Background
Nature oriented forest management has been in the focus of the
forest discussions during the last few years.
The aim of this summer school is to invite foresters from various
countries and sectors to discuss and exchange ideas.

In 1998, the summer school will be continued in the boreal coniferous zone
in Finland and in 1999 in the Mediterranean region.
In that way the participants  can get a good overview of the forest ecology,
practical methods and problems connected with nature oriented silviculture
in Europe from north to south.

Objectives
The course will look at various strategies for nature oriented forest
silviculture from scientific and practical points of view, in particular
forest ecology, wildlife management, target-tree training, forest inventory
and planning, as well logging and transport techniques and economy.

Lectures
In accordance with the aim of the summer school, lectures will be given by
the professors of Rottenburg University for Applied Forestry(RUF) and
Practical Foresters.

Tuesday, 23 September
Lectures at Fritz Erler Academy, Freudenstadt:
strategies for nature oriented forestry management

Wednesday, 24 September
Excursion in the Nothern Black Forest:
nature oriented forest management as a basis
for economical survival of forest farmers.

Thursday, 25 September
Practical training at Rottenburg University reseach area.

Friday, 26 September
Excursion in the Upper Rhine Valley:
forest management of beach and oak stands, wine testing.

Saturday, 27 September
Excursion in the Central Black Forest: natural regeneration
and management of mixed stands of Norway Spruce,
Silver Fir and Scots Pine.
Guided tour through the old town of Villingen and visit to the
Franziscan Museum with exhibits of oak dendrocjhonology.

Sunday, 28 September
Departure

Costs
The fee of 780 DM includes:

all costs for accomodation(21-28)Sptember 1997) and meals including
breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as coffee and snack in the forest,
cvocktails on Monday afternoon and wine testing on Friday

a printing compendium of the summerschool with all lectures and
excursion guides.

a CD-ROM for all participants containing the full text of all papers and
more than 1000 further references of nature oriented silviculture

Accommodation
The participants will be accommodated in Fritz Erler Academy, Freudenstadt,
Black Forest. The extra fee for a single room is 20 DM per night.

Travel
Freudenstadt is 85 km from Stuttgart airport and 200 km form Frankfurt airport.
You can easily reach Freudenstadt by train.
