In 1994, Tommy and Velma Burch's daughter, Beth Burch Smith, was killed in an automobile accident. Beth was an elementary education major at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Prior to her death, she had completed a children's story as part of a course requirement. The night before she was killed, she shared it with her parents. _My Little Corner of the World_ is a story told through the eyes of her four year old son, and it answers the questions he has for his grandfather, Tommy, concerning clearcutting. It is an emotional story which touches the lives of many who read it. Tommy and Velma donated $10,000 to the Texas Forestry Association in 1995 to have the book published and distributed to teachers. Tommy made it clear that he wanted teachers and anyone else interested to have a free copy. Within 3 months, the Texas Forestry Association and the Burch's handed out 4500 books. This exhausted the first printing quantities of the book. Based on the success of the book, the Burch's donated another $10,000 to reprint the book. The book has been distributed to Texas schools across the state and has received numerous compliments from the teachers. Copies have been also sent out across the United States and has won state, regional and national awards. It was read by TFA President Ken Addy at the Texas Arbor Day Celebration in Abilene where it received rave reviews and again numerous requests for copies. Tommy and Velma Burch have poured their hearts into _My Little Corner of the World_. The Burch's have made a significant contribution towards educating teachers, children, and even resource people on the importance of forestry and the even greater importance of communicating forestry to the general public. We are offering the book for free, a contribution to cover reprinting, shipping and handling would be welcomed.
