Dear Ann Camp, Our crews here at the university have been measuring tree heights with Blumleiss for years now, but we're in the process of replacing most of them by Vertex instruments (the same instrument Chris Dare praised here on the list). Although its price is about double of a Blumleiss, we decided to buy them because of the following advantages: - automatic slope correction; - distance tree-measurer is free to choose, so the measurer can stand at the place where the top of the tree is best seen; - no need to measure both the top and the foot of the tree; - you do not need to actually SEE the transponder since the ultrasounds it produces pass through the vegetation.
