Agroforestry parklands

Dear List Members,

We are working on a comprehensive review of agroforestry parkland systems, which refer to the practice of maintaining scattered trees in fields (cultivated and fallowed). This system is prevalent in the Sahel and Sudan zones of Africa, but is also known in other tropical and subtropical areas. The study includes bio-physical as well as socio-economic aspects. It is to be published as a FAO Forestry Paper.

We have already collected a substantial amount of literature but I would be grateful to receive information, references and personal or project experience on the following topics:

1. Literature references on parkland occurrences in Africa, in particular East, Central and Southern Africa, India and elsewhere in Asia, Oceania and Central and South America.
2. Parkland management including assisted regeneration, enriched fallows, pruning, clearing, grazing, fertilization, mulching, water harvesting and soil erosion control technologies and their impact on soils and crop production in the Sahel and Sudan zones of Africa
3. Social constraints of forestry (parkland) development programs in the Sahel and Sudan zones of Africa
4. Land and parkland tree tenure affecting parkland management in the Sahel and Sudan zones of Africa
5. New forest codes, decentralization efforts affecting parkland management in the Sahel and Sudan zones of Africa
6. Non-timber forest products (fodder, food, fuelwood, medicinals, etc.) and their social dimensions

This is a vast review which is limited only to the extent that we are mostly dealing with parkland systems and parkland species.

Any assistance will be welcome and acknowledged. Results will appear in the FAO paper.

Thank you in advance.
Best regards
