Disturbance in Boreal Forest Ecosystems: Human Impacts and Natural Processes
1997 Conference of the International Boreal Forest Research Association
August 4-8, 1997 in Duluth, Minnesota, USA
The conference program, including paper presentations, poster session, field
trip, and cultural program will emphasize the following topics:
* Changing land use patterns
* Disturbance and forest health, such as:
* wind
* insects and disease
* fire and changing fire management practices
* human-induced disturbance
* Interactions of regional and global climate and weather patterns at
different scales
* Changes in political economies, demographics and social structure:
alterations in the ability of boreal forests to provide for human needs
The International Boreal Forest Research Association (IBFRA) consists of six
boreal zone countries: Canada, Finland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United
States. The three major areas of interest within IBFRA are the effects of
global climate change, monitoring and classification of boreal forests, and
biodiversity and forest management.
The 1997 conference organizers especially encourage participation by social
scientists.
