For the past month the dieback of branchlets has been observed on Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis). This dieback is uniformly scattered throughout the canopies; appears to be occurring on virtually all hemlocks; does not appear to be associated with Hemlock Looper or Hemlock Wooley Adelgid; and is worsening rapidly to the point where nearly 5 percent of the canopy is now affected in some individuals. Who is or isn't seeing a similar problem? (Let us know where you are.) Does anyone have an explanation? - Gerry Hawkes - Woodstock, Vermont - ghawkes@sover.net
