Both Chris Goulding and Liam Malone have missed the major point in the
bucking model which Gary Eng and I developed. It is a basis for
rationalising bucking of single stems, single stands and groups of stands
in an integrated way. While it was used in Fiji for a while in a
restricted fashion, the organisation did in fact, as Chris Goulding says,
drop it in favour of MARVL,which to my knowledge bucks single stems and
adds the log products up to the stand level assuming open markets for
each log type. The main problems with ours were implementing the
methodology with the hardware then available and a change of consultant.
In recent years more powerful hardware and software systems have changed
the potential to use it and a revision by Dr. Ogweno and myself was
presented at the IUFRO Congress in Tampere, and is awaiting publication
in Finland. Ill health for a year has prevented its possible
implementation with a company operating in New Zealand.
