Survey: Pulp and paper in new southern wave

The Survey in this edition describes the development of the pulp and paper
sector in the Southern Hemisphere. We look at how the industry has played
an important role in overcoming the tyranny of isolation faced by their
countries in the last century. Each country now has separate challenges -
combined they add up to the question: Where do Southern Hemisphere pulp and
paper producers fit internationally? We provide some answers.

The Country Focus...In Chile, two of the southern world's forestry giants
are squaring off in a fight over the stake-held by a New Zealand-owned (and
US-controlled) company in Copec. In South Africa, an important timber and
woodchip resource belonging to HL&L Timber has been sold, to local firm
Mondi. In Australia, the New Zealand-based Carter Holt Harvey has purchased
the timber processing assets of the South Australian Government. An
audacious bid by a New Zealand conglomerate in a consortium including the
Chinese Government has purchased the Forestry Corporation from the New
Zealand Government.

Markets...and lower international prices have started to take their toll on
company
profits. The lower prices have also started to push down prices for
domestic products - both in logs and lumber prices - as companies reduce stocks.
