The Country Focus...In Chile, two of the southern world's forestry giants are squaring off in a fight over the stake-held by a New Zealand-owned (and US-controlled) company in Copec. In South Africa, an important timber and woodchip resource belonging to HL&L Timber has been sold, to local firm Mondi. In Australia, the New Zealand-based Carter Holt Harvey has purchased the timber processing assets of the South Australian Government. An audacious bid by a New Zealand conglomerate in a consortium including the Chinese Government has purchased the Forestry Corporation from the New Zealand Government. Markets...and lower international prices have started to take their toll on company profits. The lower prices have also started to push down prices for domestic products - both in logs and lumber prices - as companies reduce stocks.
