Announcement of 1997 Symposium on Silv. & Gen. Improvement of Eucalypts

We are organizing the 1997 Symposium on Silviculture and Genetic Improvement
of Eucalyptus under IUFRO S2.08.03 Work Group. 

I am looking forward to meeting you in Salvador next year and I would like
to ask you to forward this Call for Papers to anyone who might be interested
in the Symposium.

IUFRO´s 1997 Symposium on Silviculture and Genetic Improvement of Eucalyptus

                      Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil

Symposium Topics
-------------------------

Conference organizers seek papers and posters in the general areas of:

Tree improvement strategies
        - species and provenance selection
        - provenance tests and selection methods
        - mating schemes and hibridization
        - conventional and alternative methods in quantitative genetics

Biotechnology applied to genetic improvement of tree species
        - molecular and biochemical markers
        - genome mapping
        - production of transgenic plants
        - in vitro propagation
        - protoplast fusion
        - somatic embryogenesis

Silviculture and productivity of Eucalyptus: stand establishment,
management, protection and harvesting
        - pulp, energy and other uses
        - mechanical processing

Environmental and social impacts of eucalyptus plantations
        - water balance
        - nutrient balance
        - carbon dioxide sequestering
        - soil and water conservation
        - local communities (quality of life)


Pre and Post Symposium Technical Tours
-----------------------------------------------------------

The following Pre Symposium Technical Tours are scheduled for 17-23 August:

        - Coast of Bahia and Espirito Santo States, visiting forest companies 
          (Aracruz, Bahia Sul and Vera Cruz) and a  Natural Forest at Linhares
        - Amazonia,  visiting Jari, Amcel and Champion forest companies
        - Southern Brazil, frost-resistant Eucalyptus, visiting Rigesa,
Igaras and Riocel

The following Post Symposium Technical Tours are scheduled for 31 August -
06 September:

        - Sao Paulo State and North of Parana State, visiting Champion, 
          Suzano, Ripasa and Klabin forest companies
        - Minas Gerais State, visiting Acesita, Cenibra and Mannesmann
forest companies
        - Uruguay and Argentina,  visiting forest companies in both countries 

Full program of technical tours can be mailed upon request to

Proceedings and deadline for papers
---------------------------------------------

The proceedings of the Symposium will be published with full text of
voluntary papers and summary of posters. Full papers, WHICH ARE DUE BY
FEBRUARY 28, 1997, should also include: Title, Author(s) and Affiliation(s),
and Abstract, along with address, phone, FAX, and e-mail address of the
corresponding author, and be e-mailed to eucalypt@cnpf.embrapa.br or sent to:

Guidelines for preparing  papers for publication of proceedings will be
posted to all authors of accepted papers before 31 MARCH 1997. The
preparation of papers for publication according to guidelines provided by
the Organizing Committee will be of responsibility of the author and final
papers will be due by 30 APRIL 1997.
