2-4 February 1997. Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) Conference. Fort Collins,
Colorado, USA. The USDA Forest Management Service Center, together with the
Intermountain Research Station and the Forest Health Technology Enterprise Team
are organizing a conference to synthesize the knowledge gained from twenty
years of using the Forest Vegetation Simulator for project-level planning,
landscape analysis, forest health assessments, forest plan revision, inventory
updates, habitat evaluation, and other types of ecosystem analysis.

Sponsors include the Intermountain Research Station, State & Private Forestry,
Forest Health Protection, Washington Office Forest Management, Rocky Mountain
Station, IUFRO Research Group 4.02.00 Forest Resource Inventory and Monitoring,
IUFRO Research Group 4.02.03 Forest Inventory on Successive Occasions. The
Society of American Foresters Inventory Working Group has also been invited to
 participate.

Purpose: This conference is designed to provide a forum to bring together the
FVS community in order to (1) exchange ideas and analytical techniques
associated with the methods and approaches for using FVS, (2) review the
procedures used for incorporating forest vegetation simulation into
project-level, landscape-level, and strategic planning, and (3) identify
current gaps in knowledge, research priorities, and future system development
needs. The conference will consist of general sessions, panel discussions, a
poster session, and concurrent breakout sessions.

Who Should Attend: This conference is designed for resource analysts and
decision makers concerned with evaluating the future effects of proposed forest
management activities. Federal and state land managers, private industrial
resource managers, and natural resource consultants involved with
project-level, watershed, and strategic planning should find this program
useful. Resource specialists concerned with forest health, ecosystem
classification and wildlife habitat analysis will hear about state of the art
analytical techniques for addressing each of these issues. Forest Inventory
specialists will hear about sophisticated techniques for analyzing, updating,
and interpreting inventory data. Public affairs specialists will learn about
latest state of the art visualization tools integrated with vegetation
 simulation.

Date and Location: The conference will be held February 4-6, 1997 at the
Forest Management Service Center in Fort Collins, CO. An optional
pre-conference workshop is scheduled for February 3rd, and a post-conference
technical meeting is scheduled for February 7th.

Subject Areas: Subject areas include the use of FVS for (1) project level
planning, (2) watershed analysis, (3) forest planning, (4) regional
assessments, (5) habitat modeling, (6) forest health assessments, (7) forest
inventory, (8) visualization, GIS, and other special tools.

Presentation Contents: Papers presented at this conference will highlight (1)
the reasons for the analysis, ie. what questions were being asked and how was
FVS used to provide information for responding to those questions, (2) what
data were used in the analysis, (3) what was unique and interesting about how
FVS was applied to the problem at hand, (4) what other "tools" were utilized
and how were they linked with the simulation results, (5) use of keywords for
simulating management options, (6) use of the Event Monitor for creating custom variables, (7) use of the insect and disease extensions, (8) challenges
 overcome, and (9) lessons learned.

Proceedings: A conference proceedings will be published.

Registration: Registration materials will be distributed in late summer,
1996. Registration will be limited to 200 participants on a first come first
served basis. There is a S75.00 conference fee and a S25 refreshment fee.
These fees include registration materials, mailings, an icebreaker, admission
to the general sessions, poster session, conference proceedings and scheduled
 refreshment breaks.
