L.S. I am a new subscriber to the forest list, out of disciplinairy interest as well as curiosity. On this very first occasion I am addressing you all with a question that may intrique some and bore others. Nonetheless I would appreciate any feedback to my address: globalbv@pi.net with gratitude and pleasure. ----------------------------- Question: We are growing waterhyacinth in a 2 reservoirs, geographically only 30 miles apart. In reservoir 1 the plants grow profusely. In the other, number 2, inoculated with plants from the same source, growth is slow and retarded. The latter is bordered(4-5 meters from the reservoir edge)by fully grown Eucalyptus trees, shedding leafs and seeds into the water. Does anyone have any information on Eucalyptus seeds or leaves having growth inhibiting properties. Could it be that roots from the trees that enter the reservoir disperse root-exhudates into the water that may cause the waterplants to develop very slowly or hardly at all? Anyone has any such experience or possible other solutions? Bob Baars Foundation for Ecodevelopment
