Where to find forestry dictionaries

Hallo Forest listers

This is in further reply to a request by Philippe Verstraete (Faculte
Universitaire des sciences agronomiques, Gembloux, Belgium) about
technical French-English English-French dictionaries that include all
kinds of expressions used by foresters.

As you probably know, the International Union of Forestry Research
Organizations (IUFRO) is a non-profit, non-governmental scientific
organization open to organizations and individuals involved in
forestry research. The main aim of the Union which counts around 700
member organizations, is to promote international cooperation in
science embracing the whole field of research related to forestry.

Since February 1995 the IUFRO Secretariat in Vienna, Austria, has been
running a clearinghouse for forestry terminology. Besides the
establishment of a forestry term database, the encouragement,
promotion and realization of activities in forestry terminology, this
service unit called SYLVAVOC has the task to collect, describe and
store terminologies and relevant publications in forestry and to
inform on their existence worldwide.

This library of dictionaries, terminologies and other terminological
publications in the field of forestry offers at present around 100
references to relevant publications. A total of 20 languages is
represented . The great majority of the documents is in English.
German, French and Spanish follow.

In order to give you an efficient reply to Mr. Verstraete it would
be useful to know more about the purpose of his request. We would
then send the accurate information or all references (in total 31
additional references to E-F, F-E publications including all kind of
terminological publications, 6 of them references only to E-F
dictionaries. Around 20 to multilingual dictionaries including E-F).

By the way, Sylvavoc has the intention to publish an International
Bibliography of dictionaries and terminologies in forestry in the next
future. So, any reference to such documents/publications other than
E-F, but also E-F, F-E would be welcome. The documents included in the
Sylvavoc-libary will also be accessible through the IUFRO homepage in
due course.

Best regards
