MAY EDITION HEADLINES of the Southern Hemisphere Forest Industry Journal:

Survey: Panels and board provide new opportunities

The Survey in this edition weighs up the current state of the panels and
boards - a
sector seen as offering good opportunities for Southern Hemisphere countries
to utilise their burgeoning plantation resources with mid-range processing
developments. Prices for fibreboards have been dropping, particularly in
the competitive markets. So what does it mean for those manufacturers who
have installed new plant or expanded their existing operations on the basis
of greatly increased future demand? Our survey of manufacturers has a
somewhat surprising outcome.

The Country Focus...Australians have elected a new Government. What does it
mean for a forestry sector which in the past has been on the backfoot
against governmental and "green" pressure? In New Zealand, companies are
examining their options as they put together bids for the state-owned
Forestry Corporation of New Zealand Ltd. We highlight the key focus of
their attention - how to utilise the resource. In South Africa, we have
details of a large-scale eucalypt hardwood sale which is being directed to
the international market after a local deal fell through. In South America,
Chile is eyeing new trade horizons. In the South Pacific, we find out why
the World Wildlife Fund For Nature is focusing on tiny island states.

Everyone's asking "what's happening with the paper markets?" In the Markets
section we examine newsprint markets and the impact of Northern pricing on
Southern producers. What's happening to forestry company profits as a
result of pulp and paper market fluctuations? In the panels and boards
sector, all eyes are turned towards north and we examine the impact of the
Asian plywood sector on Southern Hemisphere producers.
