EDUCATIONAL CENTRE FOR FORESTRY PROFICIENCY, GERMANY - Forstliches Ausbildungszentrum (FAZ) MATTENHOF/Germany - The FAZ schools from 200 to 250 students each year who become professional forestry workers. INTERNET connection is supported by a federal program in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Students and staff of the FAZ will operate by INTERNET in special school subjects as education, professional training and personal exchange. + Where can you find us? The FAZ is situated in Gengenbach, a small picturesque and mediaeval town in the Black Forest close to Strasbourg. It is easily accessed by highway A 5, exit Offenburg and national road B 33. + What do we do? Education to professional proficiency in Germany is done by the so called "Duales System der Berufsbildung", a system of cooperating partners in education. Local employers engage apprentices for a period of three years and develop mainly manual skills of the profession, whereas the school is giving the theoretical background as well as general matters like social sciences, mathematics, German and so on. The FAZ is a centre for the entire federal state of Baden- Wuerttemberg for forest workers who spent each year 10 to 12 weeks of school during their three years of apprenticeship. While they visit the school they are also instructed by our partners of the forestry administration in more manual and practical matters. This third part of the apprenticeship is called "Ueberbetriebliche Ausbildung" and aims to level certain standards in forestry techniques between the different companies and forest ranges in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The centre was built for 23 million DM and opened 1983. The buildings are: - main schoolhouse with three classrooms, library, administration, dining-room and kitchen, - three boarding-houses that accommodate 80 trainees in two-bed apartments, - a building with several workshops - gymnasium For demonstration and practical training the FAZ can operate in federal and community forests nearby. The FAZ is financed by the county of Ortenau, the Ministry of Education and the forestry administration of Baden-Wuerttemberg. + What we would like to communicate with you: In matters of theoretical teaching we are looking for national and international partners. We wish a cooperation in following fields: - INFORMATION EXCHANGE Exchange from teaching data to special topics Creating a library as database for teaching - TEACHING IN PROJECTS Creating teaching concepts for special topics in cooperation with partners in Germany and foreign countries Combining different subjects in one Project, for example Forestry and Agriculture or Forestry and environmentaI benefits - TEACHING BY EXPERTS One special topic will be instructed by an expert over INTERNET. Experts from business, research and administration are visiting the FAZ for teaching. - TEAMTEACHING Teaching by two or more teachers, connected over INTERNET. - EXCHANGE OF TRAINEES In cooperation with the employers we will try to initiate an exchange program for apprentices.
