Position Announcement Research Fellow Project: Testing Sustainability Criteria and Indicators on Community-Managed Forests Term: One to two years Post: CIFOR Headquarters, Bogor, Indonesia Start Date: May 1, 1996 Established in 1993, Cifor is an autonomous, non-profit making organization, one of 16 international centers of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The research center and administrative headquarters are located in Bogor, Indonesia, with associates and research programs in Asia, Africa and Latin America. CIFORÉs purpose is to enhance the contribution of forests to human well-being, especially for poor people in tropical developing coutries. CIFOR is now seeking a research fellow to coordinate field-based research on the sustainability criteria and indicators for community-managed forests. Research will be conducted in three sites, one each in Southeast Asia, Western Amazon and Central or Eastern Africa. The research coordinator will be responsible for assembling expert teams to conduct the tests, planning, implementing and participating in the tests, analysing results, and reporting the conclusions of the tests. The coordinator will liaise with other initiatives in CIFOR and other organisations on the testing of sustainability criteria. The Project This research is part of an on-going project to test criteria and indicators of sustainability by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) in Bogor, Indonesia. The overall-project aims to identify, generate and test criteria for assessing the sustainable management of forests. The project for which a research coordinator is presently sought will assess criteria and indicators specifically on community-managed forests. Selected criteria will be reviewed and analyzed for their comparative strengths and weaknesses as they are applied in the field. The results of the research are intended to assist users of sustainability criteria and indicators (e.g. timber certifers, policy-makers, forest managers) to develop and improve their own standards for assessing sustainability. Qualifications The ideal candidate would have: ú strong social science and research skills, with a Ph.D or Masters degree in a social science-related discipline and at least five years relevant work experience ú familiarity with issues related to sustainability assessment and community-based forest management ú excellent analytical, writing and communication skills ú experience in project management ú experience in working with intercultural and interdisciplinary groups. ú excellent English and preferably at least one other of the following languages: Spanish, French or Indonesian.
