BACKGROUND
Tropical forests form the most diverse and complex ecosystem on earth- a
virtual powerhouse of evolution - containing 40 percent of all living species.
They provide us with food, medicines, germplasm stocks to replenish
our crops and energy sources. But utilization of the tropical forests for multiple
new products can be significantly increased. We can derive far greater benefits
from tropical forests than we have in the past and with appropriate management,
deliver those benefits in perpetuity.
It is clear we cannot afford to lose our tropical forests. But, we are losing them.
The task of safeguarding tropical forests represents a challenge as great as that of
any other resource issue confronting humankind. The very prospect of trying
to both conserve and utilize tropical forests raises a host of problems in one’s
mind. We shall need a series of innovative initiatives by the tropical countries,
to be matched by a new set of initiatives by the developed nations, if we are to
succeed.
The 21st century will be a century of the environment. The 21st century will be
pivotal for global natural resource management and environment protection and
restoration. The extent to which the potential of this century is realized will
depend on the ability of the world’s nations to effectively promote and manage
sound and sustainable programs for both the development of natural resources
and the conservation and restoration of the environment.

GENERAL INFORMATION
THAILAND
Located on the mainland of Southeast Asia, Thailand is bound to the north and
northeast by the Lao People’s Democratic Republic; to the north and west by the
Union of Myanmar, to the east by the Gulf of Thailand and Cambodia, to the
west by the Andaman Sea, and to the south by Malaysia.
Thailand’s bustling capital, Bangkok, is one of the world’s most exciting and
exotic cities, a dramatic contrast of ancient traditions and modern city life.
Behind the hectic facade lies a more tranquil heart and some of Asia’s most
spectacular temples to fascinate visitors. Bangkok’s superb hotels, shopping,
dining and night life are unrivaled.
NOVEMBER FESTIVAL
The Thais celebrate Loi Krathong Festival on the full moon day of twelfth
lunar month, generally mid-November. Loi Krathong is Thailand’s loveliest
festival when, under the full moon, people congregate at rivers, canals, lakes,
streams and the sea, to float away banana-leaf boats bearing a lighted candle,
incense, flowers and small coins to honor spirits and float away the past
years’ sins. The biggest Loi Krathong Festival is in Chiangmai. If you visit
Chiangmai during this festival, you will see the city at its vibrant and joyous
best. This year, Loi Krathong Festival will be on 24 November. You may
think of having a holiday in Chiangmai before attending the FORTROP 96 in
Bangkok.
VISA REQUIREMENT
All foreign visitors entering Thailand must be in possession of a valid passport
or other travel documents endorsed and valid for Thailand. Visitors from a
number of countries will be able to obtain a permit for a two-week stay on
arrival at the Bangkok International Airport, whilst others will require a visa to
be issued before arrival in Thailand. The Organizing Committee strongly
recommends that you contact the nearest Embassy/Consulate of Thailand to
determine the visa requirements in your case.
TRANSPORTATION
More than 50 airlines fly to Bangkok International Airport (BKK). Thai
Airways International (TG) is the official carrier of the FORTROP 96. Special
handling will be arranged for participants who fly Thai Airways International.
Information regarding the conference and directions to the hotels and Kasetsart
University will be available at the Information Desk at the airport baggage area.
The Organizing Committee will arrange to meet arriving participants at Bangkok
International Airport. If you are not met at the airport (due to changes in flight
schedule or whatever), you are advised to contact TG ground staff or take an
airport taxi or TG limousine to the hotel you have reserved.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation has been reserved in three hotels in the vicinity of Kasetsart
University. The Maruay Garden Hotel, the nearest hotel to the campus with
very good access to the city center, is only 1 km from the venue of the
Conference., while Rama Gardens Hotel and the Louis’ Tavern are further away,
3 and 6 km respectively. The organizers will arrange daily transport to and from
the Conference venue.
Special rates have been negotiated for the conference participants. The room
prices quoted below are the expected rates, per room, per night. Breakfast as
well as all taxes and service are included in these prices.
Hotel Single Room Double Room
Rama Gardens Baht 1,700 Baht 2,000
Maruay Garden Baht 1,200 Baht 1,400
Louis’ Tavern Baht 1,000 Baht 1,200
Exchange rate : US$ 1 = Baht 25
Please note that November is the beginning of high tourist season in Thailand,
during which hotels are fully booked. You are encouraged to reserve your room
upon registration. The organizers cannot guarantee accommodation if
reservations are made later than 30 September 1996.
CLIMATE
Late November is a rather pleasant time in Bangkok with temperatures ranging
from 22 to 30 degrees Celsius during the day. It is an almost rain-free period.
For the most part, casual, lightweight attire will be appropriate for the
Conference. For those who take tours to northern Thailand, a light jacket is
recommended.
CURRENCY/BANKING
Thai currency is the Baht, the exchange rate with the US dollar being
approximately US$ 1 = Baht 25. Most local businesses prefer Thai Baht as
payment. However, major currencies, e.g. USD, DMK, CHF, SGD, are also
accepted by some hotels and stores at a reasonable rate of exchange, but,
usually somewhat lower than that offered by banking institutions. Credit cards,
e.g. VISA, AMEX, JTB, Master Card, are accepted by most local, commercial
establishments.
TIME
The whole country has one standard time which is 7 hours earlier than
Greenwich Mean Time.
ELECTRICITY
The power supply in Thailand is 220-240 volts. The connection for appliances
is generally a flat two-pin plug.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Those who want to present a paper/poster should inform the Conference
Secretariat within the following time-limits.
Title of the paper/poster : 31 May 1996
Abstract : 31 July 1996
Full paper and diskette : 31 October 1996
The papers to be presented in each symposium are invited papers and
voluntary papers selected on country-wise and subject-content bases.
The organizers and symposium coordinators preserve the right to select
voluntary papers for oral presentation. The papers not listed in the
programme of the third announcement, except those registered for poster
presentation, will be regarded as stand-by papers for oral presentation.
The organizers are also considering having a special evening to accommodate
these papers. However, the authors of these papers are requested to also
prepare a poster presentation, in case there is no room in the sessions for an
oral presentation. The organizers will notify the authors about the status of
their paper before 15 September 1996. Therefore, it is essential to follow the
time-limits stated above.
The Organizers will distribute only the abstracts of the papers/posters during
the conference. The abstract, no more than 300 words, of your paper should
reach the Organizing Committee in time to be fitted into the program of each
symposium.
The paper, not exceeding 12 pages of A4 size must be prepared in English with
the format of IUFRO publications. The authors should send their full paper,
both on A4 paper and on computer diskette (Microsoft Word, Times New
Roman font 12 cpi.), to the Secretariat.
POSTER PRESENTATION
Each poster will be on display throughout the period of the seminar and should
be put in place on Monday 25th. Authors of posters will be required to be in
attendance during the time allotted for formal poster presentation. However, it
is suggested that authors also be at their poster before and after each session and
for reasonable periods of time during lunch and other meeting breaks during the
day.
The size of the poster display must fit on to a 1.0 x 2.0 m hard-surface board.
These presentations are an integral part of the seminar program, and care is
needed to ensure that the quality is of a high standard.
The poster will usually have an introduction, results, discussion and conclusion.
¦ Introduction should be brief but provide sufficient information for a
non-specialist to understand the purpose of the study.
¦ Only results essential to validate the conclusion should be included.
¦ The discussion should be focused on one or two key issues with a few easily
remembered key conclusions.
A poster presentation will have a high impact only if the poster is well designed
and properly laid out.
¦ All lettering of titles should be large enough, e.g. 2 cm high, to catch a reader’s
attention. Lettering of the text should be large enough (about 1 cm high) to be
easily read from a distance of 2 meters.
¦ There should only be a limited number of items in a table. Graphs, diagrams
and maps should be clearly labeled and have a brief title.
¦ There should be simple links between tables, illustrations and text.
Most participants will not want to read a large amount of detailed material,
but will prefer to discuss the poster with the author. Thus it is advisable to
keep the presentation simple.
EXHIBITION
The Organizers will arrange a space for exhibition of books, equipment,
machinery, materials, etc. in forestry and forestry-related subjects. You are
requested to notify the Conference Secretariat about the specification of your
exhibition and the space required.
