Title: Issues in World Forestry andForest Products
Location:
Center for European Studies and Architecture (CESA) at Riva San Vitale,
Switzerland, and appropriate sites in the region.
Purpose:
To increase knowledge of global forest resources, products, and related
issues is a major requirement for today's forest resource managers and
forest product specialists. The program is designed to expose students to a
broad array of interdependent and international influences on the management
of the world's forests and wood products sector. This course will enhance
students' understanding of the role forest industries play in world
society, environment and the economy. It will also feature current issues
such as maintenance of resources and products.
Dates:
July 8 through August 7.
Daily Activities:
The first three weeks will be taught at CESA and approximately one week of
travel will follow. The CESA phase will include lecture and discussion in
the mornings, field trips and group projects during the afternoons, and
evening discussions and guest speakers. The travel phase will include sites
appropriate to the subject of the forestry and wood products.
Cost:
The estimated total for this course is $3,500, plus reduced Virginia Tech
summer school tuition. The total cost includes text and reference books,
lodging, board, field trip
expenses during the course, additional week long field trip, miscellaneous
expenses, and air transportation to and from Riva San Vitale.
Instructor:
The group leader will be serving as coordinator and liaison person
throughout the study activities. He will evaluate each student's progress
throughout the program and will assign final grades.
Dr. Hammett came to Virginia Tech from Yale University where he was Senior
Faculty Fellow. His fifteen years of overseas experience serves him well in
teaching World Forestry and Wood Industry Management. He has developed a
locally managed forest product market information system in the Philippines,
supervised the Institute of Forestry Project in Nepal, and planned local
forest industry centers in Thailand and appropriate forest based enterprises
in the Dominican Republic.
Dr. Hammett received his BS in Forestry from the University of New
Hampshire, and his Masters in Forest Business Management and Ph.D. in
international trade and marketing of forest products from the University of
Georgia.

Course Credit:
Students who successfully complete this course will receive six hours of
course credit; three credits in Wood/Forestry 3784, and three credits for
Wood/Forestry 4974,, Independent Study. Wood/Forestry 3784 is approved as a
Virginia Tech Core Curriculum Area 7 elective. Graduate credit can be arranged.
Eligibility:
The course is open to any student with permission from the instructor.
Students at a sophomore level or above in agriculture and other science
related fields should consider this program. Students from other
universities or persons enrolling as special students in VPI&SU summer
school may receive transfer credit.
