The position listed below is for a forester/ecologist with quantitative and
programming experience or interest. This position is funded until, at the
least, the fall of 1999 (3 1/2 yrs). Due to federal regulations it cannot be
filled for more than 2-years and then must be renewed. It includes health
and investment plan benefits.
The primary responsibilties of the position will initially be data
collection in
the field and lab. As the study progresses the employee will increasingly
take on data analysis and programming responsibilities.
This research will be conducted at the G.W. Andrews Laboratory located at
Auburn University in cooperation with the School of Forestry at Auburn
University. Based on demonstrated ability and/or interest, training can be
provided at Auburn University to increase the employees skills to meet the
needs of this project. This is also an excellent opportunity for individuals
wishing to work towards a M.Sc. or Ph.D. in forestry or some related area.
It is possible for persons who are working towards citizenship in the U.S.,

DUTIES: The incumbent will perform a variety of technical support duties
related to research required for the development of a sustainable
productivity model for the longleaf pine ecosystem. The incumbent will be
involved in all areas of work related to the development of the model which
included data collection; data processing and analysis; and model
development and programming. Data collection duties include: selection,
felling, and measurement of longleaf pine trees in the field for their size,
competitive status, and soil environment; operating a crown architecture
measurement system and image analysis systems; preparing and measuring wood
and foliar samples. Data processing and analysis duties include: entering
and editing data; preparing preliminary data summaries; conducting
statistaical analysis under the guidance of a supervisor. Experience with
statistical analysis and statistical software packages is desireable.
Modeling and programming duties include the development of model components
and software programs or modules under the guidance of a supervisor.
Experience with an advance programming language i.e., C, C++, Ada, or Ada95
is desireable.
Note: The field work involved in this research will require
approximately 25% travel.
For supervisory or managerial positions, candidate is subject to a
probationary period unless prior supervisory or managerial experience is
creditable.

Qualification Requirements per OPM Handbook X-118 for Ecologist:
1. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading
to a bachelor's degree in biology, or a related field of science
underlying ecological research that included at least 30
semester or 45 quarter hours in basic and applied biological
sciences. ThesE hours must have included at least 9
semester/13.5 quarter hours in ecology, and 12 semester/18
quarter hours in physical and mathematical sciences; and,
2. One year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the
GS-5 level; or,
3. 1 full year of graduate-level education; or,
4. Superior academic achievement.
Qualification Requirements per OPM Handbook X-118 for Forester:
One year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-5 grade
level. OR
One full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement.
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience
required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to
the work of the position.
Training: Completion of appropriate training such as in-service training
programs, training acquired while serving in the Armed Forces, and
government-sponsored developmental training programs will be allowed credit
on a month-for-month basis.
Physical Requirements: The duties of this position require a combination of
activities in a laboratory, office and field setting. Some of the field
work will be in a forest environment and at times may require arduous
physical exertion such as carrying equipment and some tree climbing. A
physical condition or impairment may be disqualifying for appointment only
if there is a direct relationship between the condition and the nature of
the duties of this position. In some instances, a physical impairment will
not disqualify an applicant for appointment if the condition is compensated
for by a satisfactory prosthesis, medical aid, or by reasonable
accommodation.
Unpaid Experience and Volunteer Work: Credit will be given for unpaid
experience or volunteer work such as community, cultural, social service,
