Andrew Gray's response helps us realize that only rarely is the consideration between trees or hemp on the same piece of land. The question in relation to forested areas is whether they are best used for pulp production. If there are other more desirable uses, what can be substituted to provide the fiber. The same question should be addressed to the use of land where hemp could be grown. > studies of hemp production in the US worthwhile: hemp used to be > (pre-1900's) the #1 fiber source in the world, the US is a net > importer of raw fiber, and fiber production from hemp may require > fewer chemicals (at least at the processing end, but maybe more at the > cultivation end?).
