Thomas Kimmerer gives a post inviting a discussion on the comparison of
hemp vs. trees for paper production. It seems to me that there are two
considerations not included in his posting:
1. There is a relatively long rotation in tree management for fiber
compared to hemp. Given current econimic and social considerations, the
stability needed for good tree management may not be available.
2. It seems to me (without knowing much about the science) that there is a
greater requirement for toxic chemicals to prepare wood fibers compared to
hemp. This results in a paper that degrades more quickly and polution.
These need to be balanced with the problems associated with fertilizing
hemp.
