CIFOR is pleased to offer searches of the TROPIS index. TROPIS is an index of permanent plots maintained by CIFOR to help forest researchers and others interested in tree growth data make contact with people who have relevant data. The TROPIS index contains no growth data as such, but contains information about objectives, species, locations, and people responsible for experiments, trials and other permanent plot systems. Searches of the index provide a list of people (addresses, phone, etc.) who have plots corresponding to specified criteria. Eventually, it will be possible to access TROPIS via the internet, but at present, search requests must be directed via the TROPIS coordinator at CIFOR (this allow us to fine-tune TROPIS to user requirements). Search requests may include any combination of the many attributes available, including: * Species (one, any one of several, or all of several growing together); * Nature of stand (natural/planted, even-/uneven-aged, pure/mixed); * Location (latitude, longitude and elevation, or country, region, etc.); * Trial objectives (spacing, thinning, fertilizer, genotype, coppice, non-timber products, agroforestry); * Design (paired treatment/control, replicated, minimum dbh, plot size, etc.); * Ancillary information (soils, climate, site, tree coordinates); * Amount of information (number of plots, time span, number of remeasures); * Keywords in titles and comments. Thus, for example, it is possible to request a list of people who have thinning trials in stands with exactly two species (these need not be specified) planted as uneven-aged stands, complete with soil and site details and individual tree coordinates. Any other combination is possible. To request a search of the TROPIS index, simply email, fax or post your request to Jerry Vanclay at CIFOR (see address below), stating the nature of your request. This service is free, but clients are requested to offer CIFOR any additional information they uncover, whether it relates to the information provided or to additional plots not in the TROPIS system. CIFOR endeavours to ensure (but unfortunately cannot guarantee) that all information provided is complete and up-to-date, and relies on contributors and clients to provide updates and indicate errors and omissions where evident. The TROPIS index is growing rapidly, but at present (6 February) contains details of over 1400 plots with 200 species in 16 tropical countries. Information on additional plots is welcome at any time - just ask me for a data entry form.
