Dear listers, I'm looking for information concerning the application of the sustainable development concept in a cost-benefit analysis (CBA), with particular attention to forestry. According to Hanley and Spash (1992), four main problems arise with CBA in that context: irreversibility, ecosystem complexity, institutionnal capture and sustainability considerations. I am particularly concerned with the "ecosystem complexity problem", for which few studies have been done so far. I think that there is still a large gap between economists and ecologists on that matter. I'd like to know if there are any theorical and empirical attempts to evaluate (monetize) the ecosystems functions of a forest. Is there a way to classify these functions? Are they any standard analytical frameworks which are used to evaluate the ecosystem functions of a forest? I would also like to know about the latest attempts to operationalize the sustainability concept within a CBA frame. Where could I find some concrete projects with full access to related information?
