CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
SUSTAINING ECOSYSTEMS AND PEOPLE IN TEMPERATE AND BOREAL FORESTS
An International Conference on Integrating Conservation of Biological
Diversity with Social and Economic Goals
September 8 - 13, 1996
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS -- DEADLINE MARCH 15, 1996
This is the first and final call for submission of abstracts. We are
primarily soliciting abstracts that describe case studies of examples
of managing boreal and temperate forests for sustainability.
Submissions should: describe actual working examples of managing for
sustainability; be interdisciplinary in nature, including aspects of
ecological, economic, and social values; fit into one of the 3 "scales"
of interest; i.e. national/regional, sub-regional/watershed or
stand.
We will evaluate the abstracts and invite a selection of contributors
to give oral presentations. The criteria listed above, plus the
location of the case study area (we intend to include a broad range of
nationalities) will be used to choose the oral presentations. The
times allocated for each presentation will be 60 minutes
(national/regional scale), 45 minutes (sub-regional/watershed scale)
and 30 minutes (stand scale) plus a 15 minute question/discussion
period. Presenters will be encouraged to include more than one speaker
and utilize a variety of media.
Abstracts describing case studies of managing for sustainability that
are not selected for oral presentations will be presented at a poster
session. All abstracts for presentations relevant to the conference
themes of "Updates on National and International Issues" and
"Principles and Concepts of Ecosystems and Human Values" will be
presented at a poster session.
Abstracts that address the conference themes will be compiled as the
core of the conference proceedings. Abstracts can be up to three
letter size pages of 12 point text and should have 1 1/4" side margins
to permit double sided printing and binding. Author's names, addresses
and e-mail (if available) should be included.
How to Submit an Abstract

Need
Management of the world's forests to sustain diversity, productivity,
and renewability is essential. Forests support much of the world's
terrestrial biological diversity, contribute to economic activity
in many nations, and provide crucial ecological services. While
tropical forests have received much attention, the harvest and
conversion of temperate and boreal forests from native to
managed is also of growing concern, especially in developed nations.
Many initiatives and interests are focusing on sustainable forestry at
a variety of scales, including global, national, provincial, regional,
landscape and stand levels. There is a world-wide need to better
understand the variety of approaches to sustaining forest diversity.
If ecosystems and biological diversity are to be sustained in the face
of the expected human population growth and economic development of the
21st century, economic and biological goals will have to be integrated
while continuing to meet the needs of both rural and urban peoples.
This conference will focus on pro-active solutions to this integration
of biological, social and economic goals.
Conference Themes
You will hear about the latest research, conceptual approaches and
operational examples from this region and around the world. The
objective is to explore practical ways of integrating biological
diversity with economic and social systems at a variety of scales and
organizational structures. The conference will bring together people
with understanding that covers the broad range of subjects required to
sustain forests, human communities and ecosystems. It will promote
understanding of problems with emphasis on constructive long-term
solutions for addressing changes needed to sustain biological diversity
of native forests and the human communities they support into the 21st
century and beyond.
Conference Format
The conference will consist of 4 working days, field trips and a busy
and exciting social program. We expect 600 people to attend. The
conference itself will have no concurrent sessions. It will be built
around a series of introductory presentations given by distinguished,
invited speakers and presentations of case studies selected from
submissions received. Poster presentations will be an integral part of
the conference.
