WWF - Indonesia is looking for graduate students or post-docs with a background in ecology, biology, botany or zoology to conduct short-term (1 -3 month) inventory surveys in the Kayan Mentarang Nature Reserve, East Kalimantan between February and June, 1996. The students would be reimbursed for field expenses and paid a stipend. They would be responsible for their own airfare expenses to Indonesia and expenses before and after arrival in Kayan Mentarang. The inventories would contribute to the development of a management plan for the 1.4 million hectare nature reserve, one of the largest in Indonesia, if not the world. The site provides ample opportunity for adventure (excellent river rapids, steep and rugged terrain, Dayak and Punan villagers) smack in one of the most remote parts of Borneo. Little ecological work has been done to date, so there is much scope for flexibility in the kind of work that might be done. WWF is also seeking a conservation biologist to help coordinate such work over the next 6 months. The salary would be $3,000, inclusive of all benefits. Field expenses would be reimbursed. The conservation biologist would be based in the provincial capital of Samarinda or Kayan Mentarang, and can expect to spend significant amounts of time in the field. Indonesian language skills essential for the conservation biologist, and desireable but not necessary for the students/post-docs.
